Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a United States National Lakeshore located along the northeast coast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan near Empire. The park covers a 35-mile-long stretch of Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou islands. The islands resemble sleeping bears. The lakeshore also contains many cultural features including the 1871 South Manitou Island Lighthouse, and an extensive rural historic farm district. In 2011, the area won the title of “Most Beautiful Place in America." The Glen Haven Canning Company building sits along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the small town of Glen Haven a few miles away from Glen Arbor. In the 1920’s it was used to can cherries. In the 1800’s, David Henry Day founded D.H. Day Farm which still includes beautifully restored Queen-Anne style barns and outbuildings that can be seen from the top of the Dune climb along M-109. Also featured in this illustration are the Empire Bluffs, Pierce Stocking Scenic Overlook and drive. All of which can be found along M-22 which encircles Michigan’s picturesque Leelanau Peninsula.
