Leelanau Piping Plover. Limited edition signed print of original artwork by Kirk Timmons. Original drawing was done in ink, colored pencil and gouache paint on paper. Printed on linen, archival paper.
The shores of the Great Lakes were once home to nearly 800 pairs of Piping Plovers. Today, only about 75 nesting pairs remain in the Great Lakes Population. In 1986, the piping plover was placed on the Federal Endangered Species list. These unique shorebirds were once as much a part of the Leelanau region of Northwest Michigan as the Frankfort Breakwater Lighthouse, the Point Betsie Lighthouse, Empire Bluff Trail, Empire Beach, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, D. H. Day Farm, the Sleeping Bear Dunes Overlook, Leland (Fishtown), and Suttons Bay. All of which, are depicted within my illustration of a Great Lakes Piping Plover in flight. The popularity of the region which attracts thousands of tourists each summer has contributed to the Piping Plovers rapid population decline due to nest disruption and habitat deterioration. The Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team a partner group made up of Federal and State Agencies, Great Lakes Tribes, non-government organizations and interested private citizens works for recovery of this unique shorebird of the Leelanau Region and all Great Lakes beaches.
All limited-edition prints are signed and include a white mat, backing board and plasitc sleeve for their protection. These are high quality digital copies of my original artwork. I scan my original artwork and produce digital prints using pigment-based inks, not dyes, on 60 lb. (acid free, fiber based) archival paper using an Epson P600 printer. When you purchase one of my prints of my original artwork, you are buying a product that I produced (scanned, printed, signed, and packaged) entirely myself. I try to provide prints that look as much like the original artwork as possible.
