"Great Lakes Gull Pirates". Art Print of Original artwork by Kirk Timmons. 11” x 14”. Ink, colored pencil and gouache paint on paper.
Piracy is quite common in the avian world, occurring in 197 species of birds. Benjamin Franklin cited the Bald Eagle’s habit of stealing fish as a reason not to use it as the national symbol of the United States. But if you have spent anytime on a beach in Northern Michigan, the seagull is, by far, the bird most prone to skull-duggery. To a seagull, Goldfish Crackers, Slim Jims, pop corn, pretzels, cookies, and their all time favorite...potato chips, are valuable treasures to be pillaged and plundered. All the sweet, salty, and crunchy bits we love to enjoy on the beach. What Great Lakes beach goer hasn’t witnessed a gull lounging in the grassy shade or floating on the wind above, just waiting to pounce. And, having been distracted for a second, had their snack snatched away by a shiftless seagull?
This is my illustration entitled, “Great Lakes Gull Pirates”. I tried to imagine what would possess the lovely little birds to become such rude and obnoxious terrorists of the beach. If you could see a cross-section of one of them, what would be inside? Pirates perhaps, “Gull Pirates”, cruising the skies in a flying Gull Pirate Ship. Riding the winds without a care in the world. Sailing from beach to beach along the Great Lakes coastline, ransacking beach bags, blankets, and coolers to fill their ships hold with a treasure of delicious snacks.
All limited edition prints are signed and include backing board and plastic sleeve for their protection. These are high quality digital copies of my original artwork. I scan my original artwork and produce digital prints using pigment based inks, not dyes, on 60 lb. (acid free, fiber based) archival paper using an Epson P-600 printer. When you purchase one of my prints of my original artwork, you are buying a product that I produced (scanned, printed, signed, and packaged) entirely myself. I try to provide prints that look as much like the original artwork as possible.
